Diagnosis

This is probably a variable species. The ground colour is a creamy bone-white, marked with rich dark brown as illustrated. The holotype has the brown less extensive, particularly over the posterior half of the medial band, where it is faint to absent. The specimen illustrated resembles the holotype but is larger; it has a much paler ground colour on which the markings are conspicuously dark brown. However, their course, and the distribution of more irregular darkening in the forewing medial area and just distal to the postmedial angle, is common to both variants. The male genitalia are identical in these forms.

Taxonomic note

The facies has some similarity to that of the slightly larger  E. poliochroa Hampson (Singapore), but in poliochroa the ground colour is more pinkish grey, and the brown markings, when pronounced, are more uniformly dense. The forewing has the submarginal row of lunules more complete and more separated from the actual margin.

Geographical range

Borneo.

Habitat preference

The holotype of vestina is from Labuan I. The specimen illustrated is from Bidi in the lowlands of Sarawak. The species has not been taken in recent surveys, but appears to favour disturbed lowland habitats in the vicinity of human settlement.
