Diagnosis

This species has similar sexual dimorphism to macularia, but both sexes are smaller. The males are distinguished by having the pale band of the forewing broken into two patches set obliquely, both usually divided by black along a vein. The females resemble the whiter form in macularia but bear a much closer resemblance to Nyctemera species. There are rarely submarginal white spots, and the forewing white band is straighter, more oblique, broader centrally and slightly more basal.

Geographical range

Borneo, Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, ?Philippines (ssp. bungauensis).

Habitat preference

A female was taken in an area of alluvial forest by the S. Melinau just west of the Melinau Gorge. Older material with precise data is also from lowland localities such as Bidi in Sarawak and near Pontianak in Kalimantan.

Biology.

The larva was described by Piepers & Snellen (1902 [1903]). The dominant colour is yellow, with red patches on T2 and T3 and at the posterior end. The head is yellow with brown patches. The protuberances are yellow, circled with black.

Piepers & Snellen (1902 [1903]) and Tarmann (1992b) listed as host plants Amorphophallus, Brachyspata and Conophallus (Araceae), though the last two genera are not listed by Mabberley (1987).
