Diagnosis

This is a large species showing comparable variation in both sexes. The ground colour is dark blackish brown with paler fawn-white markings. These can be reduced to dots in the distal part of the wings, which are then more likely to be irrorated with bright blue towards the distal margin. Alternatively they can be larger and accompanied by longitudinal streaks running over the basal half of each wing. Thus there is a gradation from mimicry of danaine butterflies in the genus Euploea Fabricius such as E. mulciber Cramer (where the sexual dimorphism is reflected in the forms of the moth) to those in the genus Parantica Moore. See also the next species.

Taxonomic note

This species is often referred to as midamia, an incorrect subsequent spelling (Yen et al., 2005).

Geographical range

Indian Subregion, S. China and Sundaland.

Habitat preference

This is probably a lowland species, but only older material without precise data has been seen.
