Hyposada Hampson

Genus Details

Type species: hydrocampata Guenée, India.

Synonym: Hyposada Hampson, (type species postvittata Moore, Sri Lanka).

Nye (1975) explained the unintentional double usage of this generic name by Hampson, and suggested that the two type species were congeneric, which is correct according to the definition presented here.

The facies is as described for the species below. The straight, pale hindwing postmedial, black-edged on its basal side, is diagnostic, but the features are otherwise similar to those of Arasada.

The male abdomen and genitalia are similar in general structure to those of Arasada, except the uncus is longer, sometimes with lateral and dorsal protrusions on its basal part. The tegumen and saccus are shorter and broader. The valves are also broader but with two costal saccular processes and an apical one as in Arasada; the former may show bilateral asymmetry, and appear to be more closely associated with the costa than in Arasada. The juxta is broad, tongue-like, but, as in Arasada, fused to the valve bases on each side. This zone of fusion may need to be cut slightly on each side to spread the valves properly. The aedeagus is strongly curved, but the vesica is smaller than in Arasada.

The female genitalia have the apodemes of the eighth segment short (or absent), the ostium in a much shallower pouch than in Arasada, but the ductus bursae is longer, evenly sclerotised. The corpus bursae is pyriform as in Arasada but shows basal coiling in some species. The inner surface is generally rugose, but there may be a ring of coarse spining at or just distal to the constriction of the ‘pear’ or a more general light rugosity.
