Diagnosis & taxonomic note

The facies is somewhat reminiscent of Corgatha Walker species of the semipardata Walker group (p. 132), except the wing colour is a browner shade of rufous with only faint fasciation, and the black splotching, absent in most specimens, is associated with the dorsal part of the postmedials only. There are also more vinous forms recorded from Java and Bali that have the fasciation variably delineated by white (see also the description of the next species), and the two species are best distinguished on features of the male genitalia. The specimen illustrated is of the more reddish brown form. The male genitalia indicate that the species is better placed in Toanopsis, as they are very similar to those of engenes except the uncus is longer and more slender. Those of the female are also similar. No differences could be identified between the genitalia of particolor and rufata.

Geographical range

Java, Bali, Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo.

Habitat preference

The only Bornean specimens are a worn male collected on G. Kinabalu by Waterstradt, but lacking precise data, a female from montane scrub and limestone karst pinnacles at 1200m on G. Api, Sarawak, and a female from 1645m on Bukit Retak in Brunei. The species is montane in other parts of its range.
