Toanopsis homala Prout comb. n.
Cerynea homala Prout, 1925, Ann. Mag. nat. Hist. (9), 16: 398.
Cerynea homala Prout sensu Holloway, 1976: 15.
Diagnosis
This species is a distinctly smaller, paler version of engenes, but can be readily distinguished by the male and female genitalia.
Taxonomic note
The structure of the valves of the male genitalia is typical of Toanopsis rather than as in Cerynea, though they are very much shorter, the tegumen being larger relative to the vinculum. The coremata of the eighth sternite are well developed as in Toanopsis. The female genitalia are also comparable to those of engenes except the pouches on either side of the ostium are strongly crinkled.
Geographical range
Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo.
Habitat preference
The species was common in lower montane forest at 900m and 1200m on the limestone G. Api and at 1000m on G. Mulu, with singletons taken in lowland forest at 250m on the former and at 500m on the latter. Chey (1994) recorded six specimens tentatively identified as homala in a lowland plantation of Gmelina arborea near Brumas in Sabah.
