Toanopsis ichingae Holloway sp. n.
♂♂ 11mm. The facies of this species is identical to that of T. particolor. The wings are a deep vinous brown with fine but obscure darker fasciae typical of the genus. In many specimens these are picked out by pale whitish flecks, and, in extreme cases, suffusion of this nature reveals the zigzag course of the postmedial and highlights the reniform stigma; both specimens of ichingae are of this form and vinous. In such specimens a row of pale spots also can occur at the distal margin. The underside resembles that of engenes and of the next species. The male genitalia of ichingae are similar in general form to those of particolor but the uncus is only slightly swollen apically rather than strongly rhomboid as in particolor (this feature can be obscured if the uncus is mounted laterally). The valve processes show greater bilateral asymmetry, those on the right being equal in length, but with one twice this length on the left. All are sinuously tapering to a blunt apex, whereas in particolor the costal one is digitate and the saccular one is rectangular, narrower on the right, and all the same length, shorter than those in ichingae. The cucullus is present as a small disc in particolor but not evident in ichingae.
Holotype♂
SABAH: Dewan Koktas, Kinabalu Park H.Q. Aug-07 ( H.S. Barlow, J.K. Hill, Suzan B., I-Ching C.) (in FRC, Sepilok).
Paratype ♂
As holotype.
Taxonomic note
The male genitalia of both particolor and ichingae are similarly structured to those of engenes, except there is much more extreme bilateral asymmetry in the distal processes of the valves in ichingae with engenes. Those of the female of particolor also support this relationship.
Geographical range
Borneo.
Habitat preference
The two specimens were taken in the chalet area of Kinabalu Park H.Q. at about 1600m. This is surrounded by montane forest.
