Nola fraterna Moore

Roeselia fraterna Moore, 1888, Proc. zool. Soc. Lond., 1888: 393.

Diagnosis

Though the same size and colour as pumila, this species is distinguished by the forewing fasciation, particularly the sinuous double postmedial and the strongly curved and darker antemedial.

Taxonomic Notes

Hampson (1900) and Poole (1989) treated this taxon as a synonym of the Palaearctic N. squalida Staudinger, but it is distinct (Inoue, 1998), having a longer and more sinuous harpe on the male valve and a more robust cornutus in a broader aedeagus.

Geographical range

Himalaya, Burma. ?Andamans, Borneo.

There is also material from Queensland identified as fraterna in BMNH, but this species is not listed by Nielsen et al. (1996).

Habitat preference

The only Bornean specimen seen is that noted from Pulo Laut by Hampson (1900).

Biology

Material from the Andamans tentatively identified (unpublished IIE records; Robinson et al., 2001, as squalida) as fraterna was reared from Rhizophora (Rhizophoraceae).
