Eugnathia kuehi Holloway sp. n.

Image of [object Object] Holloway ♂ (holotype)
♂ (holotype)

♂♂ 15mm, ♀ 17mm. The forewing facies is similar to that of jugosa but the curved posterior component of the costal band is not so conspicuously darkened, and contains a distinctly ochreous streak in the section from the discal lunule to the distal margin. The purplish grey area posterior to the costal band contains diffuse, wavy, paler fasciation. The apex of the forewing has grey patches that truncate the costal band much as in those noted for the Himalayan specimens distinguished from jugosa above. There is also close resemblance to pulcherrima Butler (Japan, China, N.E. Himalaya), but this has a much paler costal band to the forewing and base to the hindwing. The male genitalia have valves similar both to those of the Himalayan specimens separated from jugosa and those of pulcherrima, but they are narrower than those of the former, with the saccular process distinctly but unevenly trilobed, rather than bilobed; pulcherrima also has the saccular process bilobed, and the costal process is a much longer spine than in either kuehi or the Himalayan taxon.

Holotype ♂

SARAWAK: Gunong Mulu Nat. Park, R.G.S. Exped. 1977-8 ( J.D. Holloway et al.), Site 25, April, G. Api, 900m, 427550, lower montane forest.

Paratypes

  • 1♂ (slide 20539) as holotype
  • 1♀ (slide 20538) N. BORNEO: Mt Kinabalu, Bembangan river, 20.ii-5.iii.1964, 5000 ft, Royal Soc. Exped. ( S. Kueh).

Geographical range

Borneo.

Habitat preference

All three specimens are from montane forest, one from G. Kinabalu at about 1550m, and two from lower montane forest at 900m on the limestone G. Api.

Biology

Sugi (1987) illustrated the larva of pulcherrima in Japan. It shows the highly looped posture, and has long paired processes dorsally on A1-3 and a longer horn on A8 as described in the generic account. A fine down of secondary setae appears to be present. The pattern is a longitudinal one of white lines and streaks along the dorsal part on a background of black and brown.

The host plant is Smilax as for other species (see the generic account).
