Cerynea rubra Swinhoe
Cerynea rubra Swinhoe, 1905, Ann. Mag. nat. Hist. (7), 15: 154.
Cerynea sumatrana Swinhoe, 1918, Ann. Mag. nat. Hist. (9) 2: 68, syn. n.
Diagnosis
In size and general reddish brown coloration, this species and the new one described next are somewhat similar to the species of the next genus but have a distinctively paler rufous-ochreous medial zone on all wings, with the rufous tinge extending somewhat beyond the irregular, broken, yellowish postmedials that otherwise confine it. These postmedials are more angled than in igniaria Hampson (N.E. Himalaya) and the next species, particularly in the females, which are slightly darker in the marginal areas of the wings and have more emphatic dark medial fasciae.
Taxonomic note
The male genitalia of igniaria differ from those of rubra in having longer valve processes, including a slightly twisted, paddle-like blade that extends almost to the apex of the cucullus. In the female genitalia, the ostium is broader, but the structure surrounding it is shallower and the elongate signum is similar.
Geographical range
Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra.
Habitat preference
Only four specimens have been seen, all from lowland localities, with forest, secondary vegetation and habitation.
