Diagnosis

The body is relatively robust, and the general colour is black. The forewings have iridescent bronzy green markings in the form of an antemedial band and two submarginal patches; distal to the latter is a more violet iridescence. The hindwings have a large ovate area of translucence submarginally. There is some bluish iridescence at the base of the forewing and in a row of subdorsal patches in the abdomen.

Geographical range

Borneo; Sumatra (ssp. jucunda); Java (ssp. javana); Thailand, Cambodia (ssp. splendens).

Habitat preference

Bornean material seen consists of the holotype male from Sandakan in Sabah, a female from Bidi in Sarawak, both lowland localities, and a male (in FRC, Sepilok) from just above 1000m on G. Trus Madi in Sabah.

Biology

Yen et al. (2005) illustrated the larva (photo by H. Malicky) which resembles that described for semperi above, except it appears to be more cylindrical and the darker areas are marbled with grey. The lateral rod-like structures are more equal in length and all dull pale yellow with black tips. M. Pellinen (pers. comm.) has reared the species in Thailand and sent images to the author. The larva resembles that illustrated by Yen et al., except the central greyish area across the body is broken into three bands by the yellow ground colour. There are small dorsolateral tubercles on each segment, these occurring within the yellow bands on A1-3. The lateral processes are flexible, slightly tapering, with primary setae at their apex amid a dense, short, darkish pilosity that covers the whole structure.

M. Pellinen (pers. comm.) reared the species on Memecylon (Melastomataceae) in Thailand. H. Malicky also reared the species from Memecylon (S.-H. Yen, pers. comm.).
