Diagnosis

The wings are very dark brown, the forewing with a pale yellow band that runs from about two-thirds along the costa to the tornus. It may be very slightly curved. The next two species are generally similar but very much larger and are distinguished externally mostly on size and depth or elongation of the forewing.

Taxonomic note

In the analyses of Yen et al. (2005), corculum is placed in isolation in Clade 8, the most basal position for any species currently in the genus except for the next and one other.

Geographical range

Burma (Tenasserim), Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo.

Habitat preference

During recent surveys two specimens have been taken in regenerated alluvial forest at 50m at Long Pala near G. Mulu and one close to lowland forest at 150m near Brumas in Sabah. Older material is also mostly from lowland localities.

Biology

The larva has been reared in Peninsular Malaysia (H.S. Barlow, pers. comm.). It has a black head. The body is grey with regular verrucae and, on about A6, a pair of lateral pink spots. There are dorsal white verrucae on T1, T3 and A8 (probably). Pupation is in a neat white silken cocoon. The host plant was Baccaurea motleyana (Euphorbiaceae). Tarmann (1992b) also listed Smilax (Smilacaceae).
