Lyclene circumdata Walker stat. rev.
Barsine circumdata Walker, 1864, List Specimens lepid. Insects Colln Br. Mus., 31: 252.
Asura strigipennis Herrich-Schäffer sensu Barlow, 1982: 71; see also Holloway, 1982: 212.
Diagnosis
This species and relatives have the forewing markings finer, darker and more clearly defined than in the biseriata complex, with the central fascia spaced equally between the basal and distal groups of streaks, or closer to the former. The marginal spots are more continuous around the distal margin. The genitalic differences with biseriata and allies have already been mentioned. In circumdata the valves are broadest centrally but generally narrow towards a rounded apex with a slight ventral spur. The female has the bursa only lightly scobinate distally to the dense zone of longer spines at the base. Holloway (1982) discussed the relationship of circumdata to strigipennis Herrich-Schäffer and other taxa.
L. acteola* Swinhoe comb. n . (Thailand) has female genitalia (slide 5416) consistent with membership of this complex. The whereabouts of the type of strigipennis is unclear; it does not appear to be in Berlin (W. Mey, pers. comm.).
Geographical Range
Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia (slide 2869; illustrated as strigipennis in Barlow (1982)).
Habitat Preference
The species is infrequent in lowland and lower montane forest, but also occurs (female specimens) in coastal localities and areas of disturbed forest.
