Psaphis scotais Herrich-Schäffer
Psaphis scotais Jordan, 1907, Gross-Schmett. Erde, 10: 30.
Psaphis camadeva Doubleday, sensu Holloway, 1976: 91, partim.
Psaphis euschemoides Moore, sensu Endo & Kishida, 1990, partim: Bornean female illustrated.
Diagnosis and taxonomic note
This species, euschemoides Moore, and endoi Holloway sp. n. lack the sexual dimorphism of the type species, males being of the ‘female’ forms, though generally with slightly smaller spots. The patagia are completely yellow in euschemoides (Plate 3) but basally black in all other species (only the females of the type species).
The yellow subbasal and antemedial markings of the forewing are usually more extensive in euschemoides than in scotais and the next species, and more irregular. Endo & Kishida (1999) recorded euschemoides from Borneo, but their illustration appears to be of a female scotais. No other Bornean material of the species has been seen by the author nor by M. Owada (pers. comm.), and so confirmation of the presence of euschemoides in Borneo would be welcome. The male genitalia of P. euschemoides are illustrated (Fig 72) for future reference in case the species is indeed present.
