Ilema chalana Moore

Dasychira chalana Moore, [1860] 1858-9, Cat. Lepid. Insects Mus. E. Ind. Co., 2: 339.

Ilema chalanoides Schintlmeister, 1994:128, **syn. n.

**

Diagnosis

This species and the next two are similar in facies, but chalana has the forewing a pinkish brown rather than greenish. The basal dark brown area extends further towards the dorsum, but the postmedial is less clearly delineated with white adjacent to the subapical costal dark patch. The male genitalia have the uncus entire, short, rather than two-pronged.

Taxonomic notes

Typical chalana from Java has the forewing more strongly variegated than in ssp. chalanoides **stat. n.*, * but the male genitalia are similar, (Javan male slide 97 associated with female holotype). The lowland two- pronged species noted by Schintlmeister (1994) as chalana is described next.

Geographical range

Java; Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo.

Habitat preference

The species is infrequent, both specimens taken in recent surveys being from lowland forest (hill dipterocarp, including on limestone, not above 270m).
