Calliteara strigata Moore
Dasychira strigata Moore, 1879, Descr. new Indian lepid. Insects Colln W.S. Atkinson: 58.
Dasychira niveosparsa Butler, 1881, Illust. typical Specimens lepid. Heterocera Colln Br. Mus., 5: 59.
Dasychira cordata Holloway, 1976: 50.
Diagnosis
This species also has a yellow hindwing as do horsfieldii and cerigoides, but it is a duller orange-yellow with a narrow submarginal fascia rather than a broad marginal one. The forewings are more generally and evenly fasciated, with a pale, cordate patch subbasally.
Taxonomic notes
Holloway (1976) described cordata as a distinct species from strigata, but it merits, at most, subspecific status in relation to strigata. Schintlmeister (1994) referred all material to strigata. There are minor facies differences as indicated by Holloway, but the male genitalia are similar.
Geographical range
Himalaya, Thailand; Sundaland, Buru (ssp. cordata).
Habitat preference
This is a rare montane species, recorded between 1050m and 2110m on G. Kinabalu and singly at 1465m on Bukit Retak, Brunei.
