Ataboruza unipuncta Warren comb. n.

Diagnosis

This species has a broadly pale thorax, base of the hindwing and forewing costal band, the rest of the facies being mostly rich brown as in congeners, with obscure fasciation. The pale costal band contains a single submarginal black streak and has a regular posterior border; Lophoruza vacillatrix Hampson is similar, but there are two submarginal spots within the band, and its posterior border is irregular.

Taxonomic note

The female genitalia are typical of the genus. The male genitalia are larger and more robust than in other species, with a rather complex, broad, central process to the valve, but no costal spine. The tegumen has lobes as in discisigna but smaller, and the saccus is broad, only very slightly excavated distally, rendering it somewhat square. A. bipunctata Warren comb. n. (Queensland, New Guinea) has similar facies, but is much darker red-brown, with a slightly broader pale costal band extending to the apex, where it is distinctly paler distal to two dark submarginal chevrons, the posterior one very much larger than the other. The male genitalia are similar to those of unipuncta but more delicate in build. A. rectangulata Warren comb. n. (D’ Entrecasteaux and other islands to south-east of New Guinea) is also externally similar, but the male genitalia have a rounded saccus, and the valves have both a saccular process and a costal spine, the latter well distal from the former; the tegumen lacks lobes. The female genitalia of rectangulata resemble those of unipuncta.

Habitat preference

In recent surveys singletons have been taken at 500m in hill dipterocarp forest on G. Mulu and at 900m in lower montane forest on the limestone G. Api.
