Taxonomic Notes
No differences in the male genitalia of material from various Bornean mountains has been detected, hence the synonymy presented above. For amictozona the type is indicated as lost by a handwritten note by D.S. Fletcher in the BMNH collection. It was supposedly destroyed in an air raid on Hamburg during the war. However, a specimen with the type data has been located in the BMNH (slide 16208). It is definitely conspecific with praevariegata. The shape of the spine (an oblique edge rather than a single spine) on the aedeagus distinguishes the species from similar taxa in the A. variegata Moore group in other parts of Sundaland.
Sato (2008a) has reviewed the Alcis variegata Moore group in detail, extending the range of variegata to Sumatra by bringing hypopoecila Prout into synonymy. Several species occur in each of Sumatra and Java and A. paukstadti Sato was described from Flores. No further species were recorded for Borneo.
