Agathia gigantea Butler
Agathia gigantea Butler, 1880, Ann. Mag. nat. Hist. (5), 6: 217.
Diagnosis
Males have strong grey and black submarginal bands, that on the forewing narrower, irregular in course, that of the hindwing very broad, especially towards the dorsum. Females resemble those of obsoleta and are distinguished in the diagnosis of that species above. A. solaria Swinhoe (see below) has narrower submarginal bands with a more distinctly bilinear inner margin. Both sexes of gigantea have the central indentations to this deeper, more obliquely ended.
Taxonomic notes
The taxon discisticta Prout (N.E. Himalaya) proved on dissection to be a synonym of A. solaria Swinhoe (Singapore) syn. n. rather than of gigantea. The male genitalia of gigantea have the saccus longer, more bulbous than in solaria, the valves relatively smaller, the serrate extension of the saccular angle narrower, and the distal process of the costa reduced, subapical rather than apical. A. solaria is recorded from the Himalaya, Singapore, and possibly Sulawesi. Also closely related are A. affluens Prout from Bali and A. diversiformis Warren (N.E. Himalaya).
Geographical range
Java, Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia (FRIM colln), Borneo.
Habitat preference
Both recently collected specimens seen were from lowland forest in Brunei.
