Diagnosis

This species in Borneo and O. liwana Sommerer are very similar externally, differing from O. prouti Holloway in having the grey patch at the centre of the costa separate from the marginal grey zone rather than fused to it: there is also a prominent grey patch at the base of the dorsum.

Differences between apiletica and liwana, apart from the distinctive male genitalia, are in the forewing marginal grey zone: its interior margin is centrally excavated in liwana, protruding in apiletica; the subapical white spot present in most apiletica specimens is lacking in liwana.

Taxonomic notes

O. intransilis Prout (Sumatra, Java) has similar male genitalia to falcipennis and is probably the sister-species.

Geographical range

Himalaya; Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo (ssp. apiletica).

Habitat preference

A montane species, O. falcipennis occurs in the lower montane zone, increasing in frequency in the upper montane zone.

The highest record is from 1930m on G. Kinabalu.
