Diagnosis

There is only faint, diffuse fasciation on the dull red wings. Confusion is possible with some of larger, uniform red Cyclophora and Perixera Meyrick species, but maximaria is larger, and lacks the expanded hindwing discal marking of the P. monetaria Guenée group. The male forewing venation is diagnostic. Within Mesotrophe, confusion with M. impavida Prout comb. n. is possible, but the latter is a duller, greyer red. Examination of the genitalia is recommended: the differences can be clearly seen in the figures.
