Idiochlora celataria Walker

Diagnosis

The fasciation is white, the postmedials partly sinuous.

There is a grey submarginal band on the underside that intensifies on both wings towards their junction at the forewing dorsum and the hindwing costa.

The saccular process has a strong subbasal flexure, and is apically upturned.

The pouch between the valve bases is broad, rounded.

Taxonomic Notes

The male genitalia indicate a close relationship with 1. caudularia Guenée (Sri Lanka, S. India), I. contracta Warren (Himalaya) and I. androcmes Prout (Bali). In these other taxa the pale fasciae are generally straighter. I. subtusumbrata Fuchs is probably also related or synonymous.

The group requires further study.

Geographical range

Sulawesi, Borneo, (?Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia - subtusumbrata), Seram, Kei, New Guinea; Queensland (ssp. thalassica).

Habitat preference

The male identified from genitalic characters (slide 17396) is from G. Kinabalu (Waterstradt) with no altitude given.

Other material is from lowland localities.

Biology

Yunus & Ho (1980) recorded a species identified as subtusumbrata from Coffea (Rubiaceae). The identity needs to be confirmed by dissection of the specimens concerned.
