Heteropan leesi Holloway sp. n.
♂♂ 10mm.
The wings are generally a uniform dark grey except for the hindwing where the dorsal area is extensively rich, dark purplish blue up to CuP. On the hindwing underside, a similar dark grey grades almost to black over the hindwing dorsum. The forewing has a narrow, steely blue submarginal band on the upperside. The facies is somewhat similar to that of H. analis Jordan (Burma), but this has a greater concentration of black scales along the hindwing dorsum in the male. In H. appendiculata Snellen (Sulawesi, Siberut I.) a similar edging of black scales occurs but this is set on a distinct zone that terminates in a small lobe and is separated from the blue area by a zone of pale greyish brown. The male genitalia are similar to those of argiolina except the saccus is very much longer. The process from the base of valve appears to be somewhat longer relative to the costa in argiolina. In H. cupreatum Hampson (Sri Lanka), another species with blue hindwings, this process is much shorter, and the valves are more broadly based; the uncus is also shorter. In analis, the uncus and, to a lesser extent, the tegumen are significantly shorter, and the valves lack a process from the base. The aedeagus of analis is shorter, broader, with the vesica terminating in two long, slender spines. In appendiculata (slide 2090), the uncus and tegumen are more elongated, particularly the former which is tapering, rather triangular. The saccus is shorter and broader, apically blunt. The valves lack a process as in analis. The aedeagus vesica contains longitudinal sclerites with barbs that thwart eversion; the aedeagus is shorter and broader than in leesi. The specimen of appendiculata from Siberut I. (slide 2085), west of Sumatra, has similar genitalia, but the aedeagus is somewhat shorter and twice as broad.

Paratypes
- 1♂ SARAWAK: Mt. Dulit, Dulit Trail, 26.viii.1932, undergrowth, old secondary forest, Oxford Univ. Exp. (B.M. Hobby & A.W. Moore)
- 1♂ (slide 2084) SABAH: Danum Valley Field Centre, lowland tropical forest understorey near observation tower, flying over path about midday, 4.963°N, 117.798°E, +/- 0.5km, 200m, 22.vii.2006 (D.C. Lees), DNA voucher Heteropan #1
- 1♂ (slide 2093) as previous but 27.vii.2006, 11:05, DNA voucher Heteropan #2.
Geographical range
Borneo.
Habitat preference
The specimens were taken in lowland forest, the holotype in disturbed primary forest, one paratype in advanced secondary forest and the other two in undisturbed primary forest.
Biology
Observations on adult behaviour were made by D.C. Lees (pers. comm.).
The moths fly in the understorey low across the shady floor of the forest during the day. One rested on leaf litter with the forewings held more or less flat over the hindwings rather than in a tectiform manner.
