Gyrtona proximalis Walker

Diagnosis

This species is variable in forewing pattern but the forewings are brownish grey when fresh as in the next three species rather than ashy grey as in ferrimissalis Walker.

The margin to the pale basal zone of the forewing is oblique but curved rather than straight as in obliqualis and perlignealis; it is transverse in inclusalis. The species is best distinguished by characters of the genitalia: in the male the dorsal arm of the valve is distinctively tapered, and the harpe is long; in the female the lamella antevaginalis is finely setose with distinctive lateral lobes, and the bursa has a small central signum.

Geographical range

Borneo, ?Peninsular Malaysia (specimen in collection of H.S. Barlow but not yet dissected).

Habitat preference

During the Mulu survey the species was taken infrequently in lower and upper montane forest on both G. Mulu and G. Api, with singletons from low altitude forest on limestone and kerangas.
