Euproctis viridoculata Holloway

Diagnosis

Males have been identified for this species, originally described from females only.

They are much smaller, black, with usually a small yellow spot in the position of the larger patch in the female at the posterior angle of the cell apex.

The wing fringes are yellow, as is the abdominal tuft.

The female is much larger, with a much larger pale greenish yellow patch on the generally paler forewing, this greenish yellow elsewhere being densely irrorated with black scales.

Taxonomic Notes

The forewing venation has R5 branching off relatively basally, well separated from the distal branching off of R2-4. The male genitalia have a resemblance to those of Rhypotoses Collenette (See “Euproctis” longipalpa Collenette), but the aedeagus vesica with its large cornutus is different.

Tymbals are present in the abdomen.

In the female, the ductus is long and very finely convolute.

The bursa is also unusually elongate, narrow, lacking a signum.

Geographical range

Borneo.

Habitat preference

The original series, all females, was taken from 1050m to 1620m on G. Kinabalu.

Subsequently, material of both sexes has been taken from other montane localities: G. Api (900m); G. Mulu (1790m); Bukit Pagon (1670-1680m). A male and female have also been taken in each of two lowland forest localities: 150m on G. Mulu; 300m in the Ulu Temburong, Brunei.
