Abaciscus intractabilis Walker

Homoptera intractabilis Walker, 1864, J. Linn. Soc. Lond. Zool. 7: 83.

Diagnosis

The wings are dark blackish with dull yellow flecks and dots associated with darker fasciae post- and antemedially and submarginally. It could be taken for a melanic Synegia.

Taxonomic notes

The Himalayan and Burmese A. figlina Swinhoe is regarded as a distinct species. In the male genitalia intractabilis has a narrower uncus, a diagnostically acute gnathus apex, elongate, slender, parallel-sided valves and a distinctive basal zone of much longer setae on the furca. The aedeagus vesica lacks a cornutus but is extended apically in a narrower band of sclerotisation.

Geographical range

Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra.

Habitat preference

The single Bornean specimen noted in recent surveys (Forest Research Centre, Sepilok, Sabah) was taken in secondary forest in the lowlands at Brumas. The original material was probably also from the lowlands, in Sarawak (A.R. Wallace).
