Retina Walker
Genus Details
Type species: rubrivitta Moore, N.E. Himalaya.
The analyses of Yen et al. (2005) placed Pidorus constrictus in a robust sister-relationship (Clade 11) with the type species of Retina, despite differences in wing pattern (that of the forewing of Retina consists of a longitudinal red band that fills the second quarter of the wing back from the costa). These are probably influenced by mimicry, and the two taxa otherwise share numerous features of wing shape and male genital and pregenital morphology (Yen et al., 2005: 274). Yen et al. (fig. 28: G) illustrated the eighth segment of the type species which has slender, curved arms from the tergite and a broad, radula-like structure on the sternite. The genitalia features include paired posterior arms to the tegumen, an unusually modified sacculus and a prominent pair of protuberances at the centre of the aedeagus.
The larva of the type species was illustrated by Yen et al. (2005). It is dull red over the dorsal part, but laterally and across the anterior of the thorax and across the anal segments it is pale yellow. The dorsolateral and supraspiracular tubercles within the red area are black. Those in the yellow area are yellow and bear long primary setae of the same colour.
