Squamura maculata Heylaerts

Squamura maculata Heylaerts, 1890, Ann. Soc. ent. Belg. 34, Compt. rend.: 26.

Arbela flavina Mell, 1923, Deutsch. ent. Zeitschr, 1923: 165, ?syn.

Squamura sumatrana Roepke, 1957: 48, ?syn.

Diagnosis

The forewing discal spot is much smaller, more rounded than in roepkei, and the hindwing is almost white rather than cream or brown. In the male genitalia the uncus is deeply cleft and the anal tube sheath is somewhat more sclerotised; the saccular process of the valve is shorter than in roepkei.

Taxonomic notes. The confusion regarding the identity of flavina has been discussed by Holloway (l982a). Roepke (1957) considered there were two species, lowland versus montane, of this general facies type in Java, but Bornean and Sumatra material examined indicates there is a degree of variability in both facies and genitalic characters. So the possible complex is here treated as a single taxon under the oldest available name.

Geographical range

Sumatra, Borneo, Java, ?Cambodia (Roepke).

Habitat preference

The species has been taken infrequently in lowland and lower montane forest.

Biology

The notes on biology in the family description are based on Roepke’s (1957) review of an earlier paper on this species.
