Diagnosis
The forewing facies is generally similar to that of the previous two species, but the distal yellow patch is triangular, extending to the apex, and the basal one is divided obliquely, the basal triangle being more densely invested with brown squiggles.
Taxonomic Notes
Kobes (1997) discussed the relationship between this species and the mainland Asian S. sanguinolenta Moore, both having a fovea at the base of the male forewing.
Both have the coremata on the male genitalia stated to be a distinguishing feature by Kobes (1997), but these are more massive in haemoxantha, which also has broader valves and a slender, straight cornutus in the vesica rather than a more robust, hooked one.
Geographical range
Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Bali, Borneo, Philippines.
Habitat preference
In recent surveys a singleton was taken in lowland dipterocarp forest in the Ulu Temburong of Brunei.
An older specimen from near Pontianak in the lowlands of Kalimantan has also been seen.
