Diagnosis
The wings are a rich, dark, rufous brown, slightly variegated, and with punctate white fasciae, usually rather obscure except on the forewing costa, where the antemedial and postmedial are represented by variably larger white patches.
Taxonomic Note
This species has commonly been referred to under the name finipalpis, but Edwards in Nielsen *et al. *(1996) noted that Moore (1884-1887) had, as first reviser, established maculicosta as senior synonym. Poole (1989) placed zeta as a synonym of Ericeia inangulata Guenée, but it is conspecific with finipalpis. The male eighth sternite is of a more typical framed corematous type. The genitalia have a broad saccus and rather elongate valves, with the apical portion much longer than the processes. The juxta is ovate, and there is a complex, transtilla-like structure, with deep lobes from each valve. The sterigma in the female is not highly developed.
Geographical range
Sri Lanka, Sundaland, Philippines, Papuan Region to Solomons.
Habitat preference
The species declines in frequency from the lowlands to 1780m, occurring in both forested and more disturbed habitats.
