Platyja ciacula Swinhoe
Platyja ciacula Swinhoe, 1893, Ann. Mag. nat. Hist. (6) 12:264.
Diagnosis
The facies consists of fine fasciation on dark brown with mauve suffusion, particularly in the postmedial area, as illustrated. The forewing postmedial is angled at a triangular subapical costal mark similar to that seen in Bastillaspecies (p. 62), but more posteriorly has a very pronounced double loop like a meandering river. Males have the forewing more acute, and the hindwing has its central half extensively modified in a manner similar to that seen in DelgammaMoore, the medial zone being sparsely scaled and the discocellular veins being absent. The male foreleg bears a brush of scales on the tibia.
Taxonomic note
The species is one of a series with similar facies and modification: torsilinea Guenée and exviola Hampson (S. India); flavimacula Semper (Philippines); lemurFelder (Moluccas); cyanopasta Turner (Queensland, New Guinea). Poole (1989) retained lemurin the (monobasic in his treatment) Mocrendes Nye (replacement name for Cremnodes Felder (praeocc.)), for which it is type species, and therefore available at subgeneric level for this group.
Geographical range
Andamans, N.E. Himalaya, Thailand, Sumatra, Bali, Borneo.
Habitat preference
Chey (1994) recorded a single specimen from a Gmelinaplantation at Brumas in the lowlands of Sabah, and one was taken at 1465m on Bukit Retak in Brunei.
