Diagnosis
See M. loreyi and M. venalba above. This is the smallest of the three species. The male genitalia provide the best diagnosis.
Taxonomic notes
The taxon compta Moore may also be synonymous or the mainland Asian sister-species but the type has not been examined (its current synonym stramen Hampson from S. India has a slightly smaller cucullus than roseilinea and shorter dorsal sclerotised zone to the sacculus); aspersa types were examined by W.W. Brandt, but the synonymy was not published by him. M. pauliana Rungs is similar species flying in Madagascar, and M. linearis Lucas is also related and ranges from Sulawesi to Australia. M. linearis has a much more elongated, narrow, sclerotised dorsal margin to the sacculus. Taxa in this group have a spine on a sclerotised band at the apex of the aedeagus.
Geographical range
Burma, Sundaland and Philippines to New Guinea.
Habitat preference
The species in not uncommon in disturbed, open and cultivated habitats in the lowlands.
Biology
The larva has been noted feeding on rice (Oryza) in Java (CIE records).
