Diagnosis

See the generic description. The forewing is greyish with a distinct, straight, blackish, double, transverse postmedial that is centred by a paler, more ochreous component. There is a somewhat sagittate black mark on the margin at the tornus, a component of the postmedial. The hindwing has a fine, straight, obscurely darker brown submarginal line. The species may be confused with H. irrorata Wileman & South (below) but is more robust with a stronger forewing fascia. The tornal black mark is also diagnostic. In irrorata the punctate submarginal is much more irregular in course and more distinct from thepostmedial.

Taxonomic note

The mainland Asian records of dodamade by Swinhoe (1905; see above) are probably referable to irrorata.

Geographical range

Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo.

Habitat preference

Only four specimens have been recorded in recent surveys, two from lowland forest at Labi (30-60m) and Ulu Temburong (300m) in Brunei, and two from lower montane forest (900m) on the limestone G. Api in Sarawak.
