Heoeugorna flavicincta Hampson

Heoeugorna flavicincta Hampson, 1926, Descr. Gen. Spec. Noctuinae, p. 495.

Diagnosis

The general shape and forewing markings resemble those of Undatavitta shayleenae, but the wings have conspicuous yellow borders, those of the forewing broader but suffused down in the apical zone and containing rows of small dark dots. The distinct mauve tint to the fasciation of shayleenae is lacking.

Taxonomic Notes

Though some of the fasciation of the forewing resembles that of Undatavitta, the male hindlegs have tarsal hair rather than tibial hair, and the male genitalia do not show any Undatavitta features. There is no scaphium. The tegumen has wing-like structures on each side that do not appear to be homologous with those in U. aroa. The tegumen is only slightly longer than the vinculum, unlike in typical Heoeugorna, and the vinculum forms a strong, triangular saccus. The valves are relatively small, rhomboidal, with a small subbasal, subcostal ampullate process interiorly. The aedeagus vesica is relatively broad, with areas of both fine and coarse scobination. Further north on the Asian mainland (N.E. Himalaya, Vietnam, Thailand (VK)) there is a species with more extensive yellow on the forewings and reduced yellow on the hindwings. A female from Sulawesi has the yellow on both fore- and hindwings more extensive.

Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia (Barlow Colln), Borneo.

Habitat preference

This is an uncommon species.

In recent surveys two specimens have been recorded from lowland forest at 300m in the Ulu Temburong of Brunei and one from lower montane forest at 1000m on G. Kinabalu.
