Craspedosis arycandata Walker comb. n.

Panaethia arycandata Walker, 1862, List Specimens lepid. Insects Colln Br. Mus. 24: 1108.

Arycanda arycandata Walker; Holloway, 1976: 84.

Diagnosis

The facies is similar to that of Bracca species but there are two linear, sinuous black fasciae on the forewing that exclude more broken black markings from the medial area. A similar fascia is found at the centre of the hindwing.

Taxonomic Notes

In Sumatra and Nias there flies a closely related species, C. simulans Butler comb. n., very similar to arycandata but more heavily marked.

Geographical Range

Borneo.

Habitat Preference

The species has mostly been recorded from lowland forest, but singletons have been noted in the lower montane zone, the highest being from 1200m on G. Kinabalu. There is some indication of a preference for disturbed forest, e.g. alluvial forest near G. Mulu and logged areas in Sabah (Holloway, Kirk-Spriggs & Chey, 1992).
