Diagnosis
Geographical Range
Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo; Palawan (ssp. radiolata).
Habitat Preference
is uncommon, but has been recorded from a range of forested localities from sea-level to the upper montane zone.
Taxonomic Note
H.S. Barlow (pers. comm.; preserved larva in BMNH) reared Bracca maculosa in 2004; the host plant was Ardisia (Myrsinaceae). The general features of the larva described in Part 11 seem to be widespread in the genus, but there are variations on the theme; e.g. a Philippines species, yet to be identified (R. Brown, pers. comm.) has the yellow patches mentioned in Part 11 replaced by white rings. Brown (2006) has suggested that this aposematic larval patterning may represent coral snake mimicry.
