Artena ochrobrunnea nicanora

Diagnosis

The forewings are a richer, less purplish brown than in inversa, and this darkens towards the marginal zone. The marginal zone is distinctly paler and predominantly mauve. The underside has both wings grading darker distally, and the male has the base of the hindwing and much more of the thorax and legs tinged ochreous.

Taxonomic note

Poole (1989) placed convergens as a synonym of inversa, but Kobes (1992; see above), on the advice of S. Sugi, revived it as a senior synonym of ochrobrunnea. There are slight differences in the male genitalia in the only Bornean male examined with the valve costal processes more robust, particularly that on the right. These processes are simpler, without bilateral asymmetry, in ssp. nicanora. Poole (1989) placed ochrobrunnea erroneously under Thyas Hübner.

Geographical range

Thailand (VK), Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo; New Guinea (ssp. nicanora).

Habitat preference

Only two Bornean specimens have been seen, both from lowland forest in Brunei: a male from 400m at Bedawan; a female from 300m in the Ulu Temburong.
