Aroana baliensis Hampson
Aroana baliensis Hampson, 1918, Novit zool. 25: 173.
Ectogoniella pangraptalis Strand, 1920, Arch. Naturgesch. 84(A) 12: 155, syn. n.
Ectogoniella insularis Sugi, 1982, in Inoue et al., 1982: 879, as ssp., syn. & stat. n.
Diagnosis
See Aroana rubra.
Taxonomic note
As indicated in the diagnosis of rubra above, the facies of baliensis is similar to that of cingalensis Walker. However, the male genitalia are distinct. In cingalensis the valve cucullus is more elongate and broader, tongue-like, and the saccular process is distinctly digitate rather than right-angled. A male specimen from Taiwan (slide 21141) has genitalia as in typical baliensis, therefore pangraptalis is brought into synonymy. The related taxon insularis Sugi has only minor differences in male genitalia, such as more acute and closely associated apical processes to the valve, therefore it is best treated as a subspecies of baliensis.
Geographical range
Bali, Sumbawa, Sulawesi, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra (HS / ZSM), Borneo, Taiwan; Japan (Amani Is.; ssp. insularis). The record of cingalensis from S. Thailand by Kononenko & Pinratana (2005) may well be referable to baliensis.
Habitat preference
This species was recorded more frequently than rubra (12 specimens) during the Mulu survey and not above 200m, mostly in alluvial and wet heath forest samples, but also at the very foot of the G. Mulu transect. It has also been taken at Kaingaran in the foothills of G. Trus Madi (specimen in FRC, Sepilok). A few specimens have been recorded from undisturbed forest near the Danum Valley Field Centre, Sabah (S.J. Willott, unpublished).
