Altha adala Moore

Narosa adala Moore, in Horsfield & Moore, 1859: 418.

Altha adala Moore; Hering, 1931: 680.

Diagnosis

The forewings are more extensively shaded with dull orange than in the other two species, somewhat squarer, and with a dark brown dot centrally. The male genitalia lack an asymmetric juxta and have the distal half of the aedeagus sparsely scobinate.

Taxonomic Notes

A Balinese specimen is illustrated as the two Bornean males are worn; they are somewhat larger.

Geographical Range

Burma, Thailand, Java, Bali, Borneo; probably also in Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. Hering (1931) included Tonkin, Sumbawa and Sulawesi, but the last locality could be erroneous (Narosa sp. ?).

Habitat Preference

Only two males have been taken in Borneo, from lowland rainforest at Labi and Ulu Temburong in Brunei.

Biology

The larva was described by Horsfield & Moore (1859). It is greenish white, ovate, without tubercles. The host-plant in Java is Annona (Annonaceae); in Thailand the species has been reared from Mangifera (Anacardiaceae) (Pholboon 1965).
