Acosmeryx anceus subdentata Rothschild & Jordan, 1903: 528.

Diagnosis

This species is smaller and more contrasting than the next.

The overall tone is redder above and below, particularly on the hindwing upperside, which lacks the basal grey tone of the next species but has two diffuse, straight, slightly darker fasciae across the distal half.

In the male genitalia the harpe is not apically splayed as in other species.

Taxonomic Notes

The Oriental race is ssp. subdentata Rothschild & Jordan, 1903.

Geographical range

N. India to New Guinea and Queensland.

Habitat preference

This is much less widely distributed than the previous species and perhaps restricted to disturbed habitats in the lowlands.

During the Mulu survey it was only taken in regenerating alluvial forest and then in abundance.

Biology

The larva is green with a faint subdorsal line and stronger oblique lateral stripes of a sphingine character (Bell & Scott, 1937; Moulds, 1981). Recorded host-plants (Bell & Scott; Moulds) are: Leea (Leeaceae); Cayratia, Cissus, Vitis (Vitidaceae).
