Heteropan Walker

Genus Details

Type species: basalis Walker = hyalina Kollar, India.

The wings of all species in the genus are extensively translucent white, sometimes with a yellow tinge on the forewing. Typically, at least the distal part of the forewing is clouded with grey in an irregularly reticulate manner, containing islands of the ground colour. The Bornean species is unusual in having a strong antemedial band and basal patch to the forewing that is much darker grey with rufous tints; there is also a subapical spot of the same colours on the hindwing. The male antennae are narrowly bipectinate; those of the female are filiform.

Most of the species, about a dozen, occur in mainland Asia (Owada, 1992; Owada & Horie, 2000), but the glacialis Moore group extends into Sundaland as discussed below, and there is an outlying species, simplex Jordan, in New Guinea.

The larva of A. trimacula Matsumura (Taiwan) was illustrated in Yen et al. (2005). The primary setae are on long chalazae that give a larva a bluntly spiny appearance. It is broadly variegated yellow and black.

The type species was noted to feed on Cotoneaster and Malus (Rosaceae) by Robinson et al. (2001).
