Diagnosis

This is a dark, greenish brown species with fine paler and darker markings as illustrated. A similar species is Peridea albipuncta Gaede (described later) but this is slightly larger, reddish rather than greenish brown, with the hindwing margin rounded rather than angular.

Geographical Range

Sumatra, Borneo.

Taxonomic Note

Schintlmeister (2003, S & P) extended the range of S. major through Sundaland to the Lesser Sundas and north to the whole Indian Subregion and the extreme south of China.

Habitat Preference

In the Mulu survey several specimens were taken in kerangas and in forest on the lower slopes (250 m) of the limestone G. Api. Brunei records have been mainly from lowland dipterocarp forest but one specimen was taken at 1670 m on Bukit Pagon.
