Simplicia schaldusalis Walker

Diagnosis

This and the next three species share a darkening of the wings up to the submarginals, beyond which is a distinctly paler marginal zone. In schaldusalis the forewing antemedial is oblique and the postmedial sinuous, curving strongly round a faintly darker discal lunule. These fasciae are narrow, linear, as distinct from crenate or irregular as in the next three species. Males have the forewing deepened, the costa slightly angled centrally. The antennae are ciliate, slightly fasciculate. The legs are also invested with pale rufous hair pencils, the forelegs thickened by a lens-shaped mass of shorter scales.

Geographical range

Sundaland; Buru, New Guinea (ssp. trilinea)

Habitat preference

This is a rare lowland species. Older material with specific locality data is suggestive of occurrence in disturbed areas (Sandakan, Labuan I.), but the two specimens taken in recent surveys were from forested localities at 100m (Lower Temburong) and 400m (Tutong) in Brunei.
