Serrodes complens Walker

Hypaetra complens Walker, 1858, List Specimens lepid. Insects Colln Br. Mus., 14: 1415.

Diagnosis

Males of this and the next species have an elongate androconial area just interior to the costa along the medial sector. Both sexes have a distinctly oblique band between the antemedial and postmedial zones of black marking; in the males this band is pale rufous brown, grey in females, and in both sexes the black markings are reduced and irregular. The hindwings have a narrow, incomplete black fascia subtornally.

Taxonomic note

This is a very variable species as well as being sexually dimorphic. No significant differences in male genitalia were found through the geographical range or with stigmata and its synonyms, which are therefore brought into synonymy with complens.

Geographical range

N.E. Himalaya, Andamans, Sundaland to the Solomons; not known from Australia (Nielsen et al., 1996).

Habitat preference

Both specimens taken in recent surveys are females, one from dry, sandy heath forest at 15m near Telisai in Brunei and one from 900m in lower montane forest on the limestone G. Api.
