Semiothisops macariata Hampson

Zethes macariata Hampson, 1902, J. Bombay nat. Hist. Soc., 14: 216.

Diagnosis

The species bears some resemblance to ennomine geometrids of the tribe Macariini, particularly the wing shape and markings, but the reniform and orbicular marks of the forewing identify it as a noctuid, and the straw-coloured hair tufts on the male hindwing dorsum are also distinctive. There is some sexual dimorphism, the females having the margin of the forewing angled rather than straight, but that of the hindwing much less sharply angled. The wings have darker marginal areas in the female, and more angled and irregular postmedials. The male forewing has a distinctive dark brown band adjacent to the reniform that broadens posterior to it.

Geographical range

Himalaya, Taiwan, Thailand (VK), Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi.

Habitat preference

All material seen is from lowland forest, with no specimens from over 200m. In the Danum Valley area of Sabah some of the specimens were from areas of logged forest.
