Diagnosis

This is the largest of the four Bornean species, the males having the forewing apex strongly produced, and the wings a striate, deep, almost red-black brown; the females have the forewing less produced, more variegated, but a similarly pinkish tinge is present.

Taxonomic notes

This species is distinct from S. oenistis Hampson (Sulawesi to Fiji). The reniform stigma of the forewing is very much smaller than in that species; where the basal half of the forewing is anteriorly darker (females), then the boundary between the dark and pale halves has a dentation from the former to the latter in oenistis but not in interrupta. In the male genitalia the uncus is apically more angular and the valve sacculus not so expanded dorsally as in oenistis or the related Fijian S.tomaniiviensis Robinson. The Bornean and Sumatran race is darker, pinker and less variegated, particularly in the female, than the typical race from more easterly localities.

Habitat preference

Almost all records have been from upper montane forest, where the species is often common.
