Sarcinodes malakarius Sommerer

Sarcinodes malakarius Sommerer, 1995: 14.

Sarcinodes restitutaria Walker sensu Holloway, 1976: 58; Yazaki, 1988: 241.

Diagnosis

This and the next two species are very similar in external appearance, and most reliably distinguished on features of the male genitalia.

The species is paler, lacking a pale discal patch on the forewing, and with the hindwing fascia straight.

Taxonomic Notes

Sommerer (1995) distinguished this species from restitutaria Walker (Himalaya) and S. yazakii Inoue (Thailand) on the basis of constant minor differences in the ornamentation of the valves and of the eighth sternite.

Evidence of sympatry of specimens with these genitalic differences is needed to confirm the specific status of the taxa rather than their being subordinated to restitutaria as subspecies.

Geographical range

Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo.

Habitat preference

S. malakarius* is the only montane species of the Bornean Auxima trio, recorded from 1000m in lower montane forest on G. Mulu, at 1618m on Bukit Retak in Brunei and from 1600m to 2600m on G. Kinabalu.
