Rusicada combinans Walker comb. n.stat. rev.
Gonitis combinans Walker, [1858] 1857, List Specimens lepid. Insects Colln Br. Mus., 13: 1001
Anomis macronephra Holloway, 1982: 239, syn. n.
Diagnosis
The remaining species have the forewing reniform with the posterior lobe equal to, or larger than, the anterior one: it is definitely larger in combinans and filled with paler grey or dark brown, rather than with the orange ground-colour. The species also have two more or less symmetrical setose projections on the anellar attachment to the aedeagus, a planar juxta that is entire or only weakly bifid, and valve coremata with the setal bases dark-centred. In combinans the juxta is the more distinctly bifid amongst the four. The lobes of the lamella postvaginalis in the females are longer than they are basally broad and are separated by a deep cleft; they are parallel-sided, set close together in combinans. See also the keys in the generic account.
Taxonomic note
The holotype of combinans is female but had the abdomen of a male revocans glued on. This led to erroneous synonymy of combinans with revocans and redescription of the former as *macronephra *by Holloway (1982) and recorded thus by Poole (1989) and Nielsen et al. (1996).
Geographical range
Sri Lanka, India, Taiwan, Sundaland, Philippines.
Habitat preference
No records have been made in recent surveys, but older material in BMNH is from Samarinda in the lowlands of Kalimantan.
Biology
The species was reared in Malaysia by Ms A. Fox (in litt.), who described the larva. It is pale yellow, marked heavily longitudinally and transversely with black.
The host-plant was Hibiscus (Malvaceae).
