Penicillaria dorsipuncta Hampson
Bombotelia dorsipuncta Hampson, 1912, Cat. Lepid. Phal. Br. Mus. 11: 13. The ♂ of
Hampson's syntypic series labelled 'type ♂' is hereby designated LECTOTYPE.
Bombotelia dorsipuncta Hampson; Gaede, 1937; Holloway, 1976: 16.
Penicillaria dorsipuncta Hampson; Barlow, 1982: 90.
Diagnosis
The forewing pattern is similar to that of maculata in having a subtornal whitish patch, but it has an angled antemedial (cf. straight, oblique). There is a diagnostic white spot dorsally, subbasally on the abdomen.
Geographical range
Sundaland and eastwards to New Guinea and Queensland.
Habitat preference
The species appears to be infrequent from about 1000 to 1800m, mainly in upper montane forest.
It has been recorded recently from G. Kinabalu, from G. Mulu in Sarawak and Bukit Pagon in Brunei.
Biology
Sevastopulo (1941) noted Semecarpus (Anacardiaceae) as a host- plant for dorsipuncta, following Hampson’s opinion that Semper’s account of the larva of maculata in fact referred to dorsipuncta (see below).
