Parolulis absimilis Hampson comb. n.

Diagnosis

This species is similar to Olulis megalopis Hampson (see below) but slightly larger, with paler yellowish fawn predominating on the forewings rather than browner shades. The fasciation is weak but similar, though the pale, irregularly straight submarginal of absimilis is not evident in megalopis. See also P. olivescoides (above), a species very similar to absimilis in size and facies but is readily distinguished by the straight, oblique anterior half of the forewing postmedial. The forewing is also generally more strongly variegated with greyish brown, though this is variable.

Taxonomic note

The male genitalia have several features that indicate an affinity to Parolulis renalis, particularly the shape of the uncus and the length and orientation of the processes of the valves (in addition, there is a third slender process). The species is therefore transferred to Parolulis.

Geographical range

N.E. Himalaya, Borneo.

Habitat preference

All material was taken during the Mulu survey in lower montane forest: five specimens at 1000m on G. Mulu; one specimen at 900m on the limestone G. Api.
